Tracing her artistic life back to her childhood, Jo realises that her earliest impressions were of field and woodland, river and skies. She grew up in Cookham, Berkshire, at the end of WWII and she continues to feel a strong affinity with the English countryside.
Student days were spent in London. The sombre subtlety of the greys and the brilliance of the lights left their own impression. Training as a printer at Camberwell in the 60’s, she expressed herself mainly in observational work, life and still life. A career in teaching followed – with family life also – and since retirement she has been able to devote more time to her work.
Painting, printmaking and ceramics are now the mediums she uses, but she has been surprised to find that my most satisfying (and successful) images have come from a distillation of experiences resulting in work from her imagination.
Jo's response to the environment in which she finds herself, and a desire to share her enjoyment of the visual world with others, is the constant drive behind her work.
