Nikki produces figurative and abstract paintings, of various dimensions, using acrylics and collage on canvas and paper. Her work represents an exploration of discovery which forms a dialogue between internal and external environments. She is interested in colour and form, creating images based on her experiences and feelings, which is constantly developing and evolving. In addition to painting, she works as a freelance art therapist and art facilitator, facilitating weekly art sessions with individuals and groups. She specialises in working with people with special needs, providing an environment where people can feel safe to explore their own creativity using a variety of art materials and techniques.
‘I close my eyes in order to see’ Paul Gaugin’
Nikki works on her paintings over a period of time, adding layers that accumulate, without totally eradicating the previous layers and working back to reveal what lies beneath. Like our emotions and experiences we can never eradicate what we have lived through. The process of painting allows her to express my intentions through the motion of the brush or palette knife, colour and texture. Nikki begins with the seed of an idea either from her environment or feelings, then she is directed by the work. Nikki enjoys the interplay between her internal environment and external landscapes that evolve in the paintings.
Nkki has always enjoyed painting and finds it a necessity to process her thoughts through image making. She has a degree in crafts and post graduate diploma in art therapy. Since her studies, alongside her own image making, Nikki has worked in a variety of organisations with many individuals and groups, encouraging their creativity and helping them express themselves through art, which has all led to influence her own work.
